Girlz Engineering Camp
Horizon Goodwill Industries, Montgomery County Public Schools, and SourceAmerica have joined hands to oversee the growth and eventual success of school going girls attending or taking part in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) programs. The main aim of the joint venture which has been named the Girlz Engineering Camp is to remove any barriers associated with undertaking the programs and creating opportunities in the STEM field for the girls.
Horizon Goodwill Industries are the primary organizers of the event, and they will host over 20 high school going girls at their corporate headquarters. The meeting will primarily involve information briefing, re-engineering sessions, virtual and online marketplace, as well as the steps required to solve the problems encountered by the girls in their programs.
Montgomery County Public Schools has a total of twelve high schools which offer national pre-engineering programs. These programs are grouped under Project Lead the Way Advanced Engineering which is fully supported by the Montgomery County Public Schools Offices of Science, Technology, and Engineering and Career Technology Education. This five-course program provides various opportunities for a vast number of students to explore different engineering topics, which include but not limited to three-dimensional modeling, civil engineering, aerospace engineering, and digital electronics.
The Roles Played by The Girlz Engineering Camp
The Girlz Engineering Camp will help students in building their analytical and problem-solving skills, enhancing their critical thinking, as well as learning how to collaborate and communicate with each other in an efficient manner. With the knowledge earned from this workshop, the students will be in a position to solve real world engineering problems by using the engineering design process learned at the camp.
The Girlz Engineering Camp has been made possible thanks to the funding received from local, community, and federal institutions. Thanks to this engineering camp, more girls will get the required funds and information to pursue their engineering careers. This year’s camp will cover Horizon Goodwill’s online-oriented sales and specific engineering design challenges. The involved students will also participate in two-themed field trips which will include a trip to Montgomery College Rockville campus and the Horizon Goodwill eCommerce social enterprise.
The Role Played by SourceAmerica in the Girlz Engineering CampsSourceAmerica is one of the leading disability employers in the country. The organization employs the use of design to help people with disability to realize their potentials and live to their standards. By partnering with Horizon Goodwill Industries and MCPS, the organization will be able to offer a curriculum which is in line with the mission as well as allow girls with disabilities to get jobs once they graduate.
